What Is the Difference Between Coaching and Consulting?

Many times, the lines between consulting and coaching become blurred. There are even times when I’ve said. “I’m a consultant who coaches.” Let’s take a quick look at the main differences between the two.

Usually, a consultant is a subject matter expert who provides primarily technical and professional advice. This advice is based on their know-how, understanding, and experience. You go into the engagement expecting to be presented with one or more options to address a particular situation.

On the other side, a coach will help you to find your own answers.

They will guide you as you develop clarity in your direction and purpose. Coaches use frameworks, roadmaps, and other tools to assist you as you move forward, discover solutions, and grow personally as a result.

In the right situation, both can help you grow tremendously. In either case, you should be held as a competent expert in YOU, your field, or your business.

Focus is the key difference between coaching and consulting. In consulting, the focus is on a problem, challenge, or opportunity. But with coaching, the focus is on you first.

So how does coaching help?

The coach guides and empowers you. You’ll clarify and define your own terms as you tap into your abilities to solve problems and challenges, as well as tackle the opportunities for personal growth that emerge in work and life.

Rather than delving into your past, coaching is future-focused. It has a natural transformative power… helping you discover your own path and solutions you might not have been able to see before.

My promise to you is this… First, the call will be 100% zero pressure, plus it will be worth the hour. And it will give us both a chance to decide if we’re a good fit for each other. (By the way, most coaches agree this is the most important characteristic in a successful coaching experience.)
